Course Racing

Course Racing on a windsurfer is similar to a Yacht race, on a given upwind - downwind course. Races are always a combination of tactics, speed and technique. Windsurfing has been an Olympic sport since the 1984 Games held in Los Angeles, and like all course races in the past, the boards were long and narrow with a centerboard and a short tail fin. We call them longboards.

Shorter and wider boards without centerboards, but with long tailfins emerged in the late 90's. These "wide-boards" are faster, less tactical but more technical to sail. They are called Formula boards, and some 90% of course racing activity today are happening on modern wide-boards. It is also very plausible that the future Olympic windsurfing board will be a short wide concept - with or without centerboard.
