Fleets, format & scoring

If you have entered a wave competition before you will be well used to the drill, but you might like to refresh your memory. For those of you who are new to this game, firstly welcome and secondly if you read this lot below it should help you and good luck. We have also included for your information a separate sheet on wave riding guidelines and the full wave riding guidelines.

Fleets
  • Fleets are divided into 2 divisions: Gold Fleet & Fun Fleet.

  • In the event of enough entrants, a separate junior fleet and separate Ladies fleet may be established.

  • Fun fleet is aimed at newcomers to wave competition, and those wanting to just have fun while improving their windsurfing skills.

  • Gold Fleet is aimed at top level competition, and producing International standard competitors.
Competition Format
  • The competition follows the IWA’s current wave rules and guidelines, which are based on the format used by the PWA and UKWA.

  • We will be running a flexible double REPECHARGE heat format. Yes we know it sounds very complicated but it really is very simple basically if you get knocked out you get a second change to get back in.

  • PLEASE CHECK BACK TO HEAT BOARD AFTER YOUR HEAT _ BECAUSE EVEN IF YOU DO NOT WIN THE HEAT... YOU WILL BE SAILING IN ANOTHER HEAT, AND GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE TO ADVANCE

  • Juniors – if sufficient entries are received, a separate Junior fleet will be run.

  • Expression sessions for newcomers/juniors may be run.

  • In the event of non wave conditions, shortboard freestyle may be run - BUT WILL NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE NATIONAL WAVE CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • In the event of not completing a full round of competition, the prizes will be raffled off to those competitors who attend the prize giving. There are no circumstances where there will be a refund of entry fees. (The costs the event incurs are the same with or without a result, Sorry)
Scoring

During each heat you will be judged, along with your competitors, by a panel of judges on your jumps and wave riding in the competition area, transitions will not be scored unless they are on or off the wave. The amount of waves and jump scores that count to make up your final score vary (as conditions vary) these are set by the head wave judge before your heat starts as is one of the reasons you must check the notice board before your heat. The totals of these scores are then multiplied by their respective “multiplication factors” (which are also displayed on the notice board) to give your overall score.
